Tea for Two

April 23, 2007

My daughter and I went to a Mothers Daughters and Friends Tea yesterday to benefit the Dinwiddie/McKenney Woman’s Club.  It was a glorious day- well over 80*, sunny and breezy.  The home we visited was beautifully appointed and it sat over-looking a lake and horse pasture.  All the ladies (and few gentlemen, like the minister) sat on the back deck or on the lawn or pergola.  The hostess’s sister brought a gaggle of ducklings which delighted the children.  Lovely!!  At the end we received a cute little party favor.

You can imagine the food- YUM-O. Chicken salad in those little pastry cups, pimento cheese sandwiches, salmon mousse, cheese and crackers, PB&J for the kids, cheese straws, lemon squares, all kinds of cookies like macaroons and such.

I love tea- it’s so fun.  I used to have tea a lot- fun little tea parties to large ones for groups.  I have a tea pot purse like this but mine is green.

Everyone cringes at the thought of having tea, but it is SO easy!! All you need is a table, cute napkins, a few eats and the tea!!! A small vase of flowers and you have decorations!!  Tea is about people, not which pinkie finger is in the air!  And it’a a great excuse to put on a cute hat.

Here are some good links to get you started:

Sandwiches, Quick Tips and Etiquette, Links and how-tos, More theme ideas.

One of my favorite recipes- lavender lemonade.  Sure to knock the socks off everyone- they will think you are Martha Stewart’s long-lost 2nd daughter!!!

I need to get going on my LOOONG to-do list…….Bye!

Stuff

April 20, 2007

All kinds of stuff is going on right now- Cursillo is next week, my MIL is in the hospital with a blood clot, little boy has a touch of stomach “thing”- if it’s not one thing it’s another.  And the ultimate sadness across the state at VA Tech.  We all need to be grateful for the blessings God gives us.

I did get the McD Wizard of Oz dolls-the good news is, besides just getting them is that the manager gave me the WHOLE display background too AND sold it to me for $5!!! (I think it was under the table- just a hunch- whatever)  Unfortunately Glenda the Good Witch is missing, so I’m inquiring at another McD to buy their display.  I want a complete set!  I did a quick Google search- people are crazy for them….. I saw a single doll on eBay for $9.99!!!

Here are a couple of diversions-

printed linen fabric– I’m a sucker for pansies- the clover looks like crown vetch to me- very pretty too

Beautiful site– whether you know French of not

Sugared flowers– I say I’m going to sugar my violets every year- maybe this year

Off to face the day!

Crocus-Minded

April 12, 2007

I’m cleaning in the attic- “cleaning” is a loose term- it’s more like shifting boxes around and hopefully throwing stuff away!  It’s a work in progress……. it’s like Flylady says, it didn’t get that way in a day and it will take more than a day to declutter!

I’m taking a break- it’s hot up there!!

Here is a poem I really like- it’s from a funny little book called Bless This Mess and other prayers .

It takes courage
    to be crocus-minded.

Lord, I’d rather wait until June,
    like wise roses,
when the hazards of winter are safely behind,
    and I’m expected,
    and everything’s ready for roses.

But crocuses?
    Highly irregular.
Knifing up through hard-frozen ground and snow,
        sticking their necks out.
    because they believe in spring
    and have something personal
and emphatic to say about it.

Lord, I am by nature rose-minded.
Even when I have studied the situation here
and know there are wrongs that need righting,
    affirmations that need stating,
and know also that my speaking out may offend–
        for it rocks the boat–
well, I’d rather wait until June.
Maybe later things will work themselves out,
and we won’t have to make an issue of it.

Lord, forgive.
    Wrongs don’t work themselves out.
Injustices and inequities and hurt don’t just dissolve.

Somebody has to stick his neck out,
    somebody who cares enough
        to think through
        and work through hard ground,
    because he believes
    and has something personal
and emphatic to say about it.

Me Lord?

Could it be that there are things that need to be said,
and you want me to say them?

I pray for courage.

                    Amen.

Scarecrow

Ok, so I’m weird (like you didn’t already know that..), but I collect the McDonald’s Happy Meal Madame Alexander dolls.  They are cute, affordable, and well made. (And the value shoots right up!!  Doll people are nuts.)

Usually they come out in October- I always watch for them.  We rarely eat at McDonald’s so I’m not in there often otherwise.  Well what do you know- this year they came out NOW!!! And they’ve been out for weeks- grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!

The theme is Wizard of Oz (isn’t everything this year?? Have you noticed? This is the 3rd thing I’ve seen.)  I’m all out of sorts because the last 2 dolls are currently out, and I had to go to three McD’s to find THEM.  I’m gong to ask to buy the display models today…….. I’m determined!!!!

One doll I DID get- the Angry Chicken rag doll patterns.  After she made and showed the doll on her blog last year I did my own version- not bad I think for making from scratch with nothing but a picture to go on! As soon as I can find the disk with the picture on it I’ll post it.

I’m off to return a movie and try to buy McD’s display dolls!! [Side note: I did ask, and I was successful!! I’ll get them when the promo is over!]

Free at last!!!

April 9, 2007

Well after a hectic Lent and jam-packed Easter, the kids are off to grandparents’ and I’M here home with hubby for four days!!!  I need to decide what on my monstrous to-do list I will get done……..

 2007-04-09-ice-cream-bombe.jpg

One awesome thing I made for Easter- actually my Dad’s birthday- was an ice cream cake, or bombe.  I sort of winged it and it turned out great.  Here is a picture- sorry for the messy plate.

I lined a metal mixing bowl with plastic wrap and then brownies, all pieced to fit.  Then I filled the center with Breyer’s raspberry chip ice cream (MMmmmm!!!!). After it was re-frozen overnight I put it on a plate, iced it with Cool Whip and drizzled chocolate over the top to look fancy.  IT was a big hit.

Also on the Easter table was  60 minute rolls- my mom sent me the recipe and they are HEAVEN!!! They taste like Ukrop’s White House rolls or good southern rolls and they really only take 60 minutes- from start to cooling rack. AND it makes 2 dozen!!!!!

60 minute rolls

For Saturday night I made linguine with clam sauce– thanks John for the recipe! It rocked! (It’s the closest to his mother’s he could find for me- )  Easter dinner included Smithfield spiral ham, roasted fingerling potatoes, cold dilly beans (they are sort of pickled), spinach with hot bacon dressing, the rolls, deviled eggs, and later the bombe and Is it Really Better Than S*x? Cake by Paula Deen (bad girl!).

I guess I’ll go make myself another ham sandwich for dinner!  DH will be home soon…… talk to you later!!
